Water: Water is wet. But seriously water is multifunctional in skincare primarily as a solvent, assisting making ingredients easier to absorb into the surface levels of the skin and provide hydration. It is essential in all liquid cosmetics that are based on emulsification, such as this one. We use distilled water, free from impurities and minerals.
Propanediol: A humectant (moisture magnet) and solvent. This ingredient improves the absorption of ingredients as well as being a superb skin hydrator, ideally suited for people with skin prone to sensitisation. It is a biodegradable ingredient and our source is palm oil-free.
Activated Charcoal Powder: Two sizes (50M and 70M) of patented oxygenated activated powder to operate as a scrubbing agent and adsorbing dirt and impurities from the skin’s surface. We produce our carbon in-house from waste almond shells that would have gone to landfill. The fancy word is waste-valorisation, keep that in your back pocket next time you’re at trivia.
Note about M: ‘M’ stands for mesh (hey that’s our name!) and is the term used for the size grading in activated carbon.
In the scrub, 50M gently scrubs the skin without damaging it, physically removing hardened skin, congesting oxidised sebum and general dirt and debris. It's like a broom for your skin.
70M is the adsorbing powder that collects up any surface
oxidised oils and dead skin displaced by the 50M scrub. It operates like a dust-pan, collecting all the bits lifted by the 50M.
Glycerine: A potent humectant, glycerine is used in this formulation to condition the skin leaving it feeling lightly hydrated. The glycerine we have sourced for this formulation is palm oil-free.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine: The primary surfactant derived from coconut oil fatty acids. It is a mild cleansing agent to help rinse the dirt and oil lifted from the skin by OA Carbon It is part of the surfactant system in this product, along with sodium cocoyl isethionate and decyl glucoside. It is a palm oil-free ingredient.
Ethyl Alcohol: Used as a co-solvent, ethyl alcohol is a
highly effective ingredient to help solvate ingredients and improve the application. Ethyl alcohol is used in low concentrations and when combined with humectants and fatty acids (like this formula) there is extremely low risk of
the product excessively drying your skin.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate: A secondary surfactant from
coconut fatty acids and sustainable palm oil. In conjunction with cocamidopropyl betaine and decyl glucoside, this ingredient helps rinse away dirt and oil from the skin lifted by the OA Carbon.
Sodium Bentonite: A highly absorbing clay, bentonite is
highly effective at absorbing excess sebum (skin oil). It is used in this formulation to support the adsorbent properties of 70M OA Carbon.
Sweet Almond Oil: A light and nourishing oil from almond
kernels, sweet almond oil is a highly functional oil able to soothe the skin and nourish it deeply without feeling greasy or uncomfortable. It is a natural
source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant compound helpful in protecting skin from environmental aggressors.
Decyl Glucoside: A sugar surfactant and fragrance
solubiliser. In combination with cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium cocoyl isethionate, this ingredient forms part of the surfactant system to rinse away dirt and dead skin.
Cetearyl Alcohol: A fatty alcohol that nourishes your skin and stabilises our formula.
Ceteareth-20: An emulsifying agent used in conjunction with
Cetearyl Alcohol to nourish your skin and stabilise the formula.
Cetyl Alcohol: A cosmetic wax used in this product as an
emollient to nourish the skin.
Salicylic Acid: A chemical exfoliator, used in this formula
to accompany the physical exfoliation of the OA Carbon. Salicylic acid is
able to slough off dead skin, unclog pores of oxidised sebum and dead skin and
gently resurface the skin. We have used 1% in this formula as it operates in
tandem with the physical exfoliators.
Benzyl Alcohol: An aromatic alcohol that is used as part of
the preservative system along with phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin and sodium phytate. It also operates as a stabiliser. Some people have a diagnosed allergic reaction to this ingredient. If you suspect an allergy, discontinue use and consult with your general practitioner before reintroducing into your routine.
Phenoxyethanol: Blended with ethylhexylglycerin, this duo
operates as a broad spectrum preservative to impair microbial growth such as yeasts, bacteria and mould fungi. In combination with sodium phytate and benzyl alcohol these ingredients operate as the product’s preservation system.

Rosalina Essential Oil: Also known as the lavender tea-tree, rosaline essential oil is a fragrance oil with a stimulating scent profile of aromatic, woody and floral. Rosalina Essential Oil contains potential fragrance allergens linalool and limonene (see below).
Xanthan Gum: A natural stabiliser and emulsifier from corn sugar, xanthan gum is used as a thickening and stabilising agent.
Sodium Phytate: A biodegradable chelating agent sourced from phytic acid. Chelating agents are molecules that collect up potential food sources for microbes, helping to preserve the formula. In conjunction with phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol and ethylhexylglycerin, this ingredient is part of this product's preservation system.
Rosemary Leaf Extract: An naturally-sourced antioxidant
compound to help guard the skin against any environmental damage.
Linalool: A naturally occurring component of Rosalina Essential Oil. This ingredient is not added separately, however we have listed it here due to it potentially being an allergen to some people.

FAQs
Questions from the MESH Laboratory Community to help get you started.
A face scrub is a treatment product you can use when you need to. We recommend using this product after your regular cleansing routine up to three times a week. After cleansing, use a small amount of the scrub and gentle massage into the skin with circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Continue with your regular skincare routine.
Our MESH Laboratory scrub, a physical exfoliant, employs small granules to remove dead skin, oxidised skin oil, and trapped dirt from the skin surface. Contrary to the myth that physical exfoliants cause microtears leading to infections, evidence suggests that the exfoliating particles themselves don't cause such tears. Instead, over- exfoliation, common among scrub users, may compromise the skin barrier, increasing susceptibility to infections. While scrubbing provides a sensorial pleasure, excessive use can worsen skin condition.
If you over-exfoliate, either with scrub or chemical exfoliants, you can make your skin more susceptible to infections simply because the barrier has been impaired. For more experienced users, please use this scrub 1-3 times a week. And be gentle, your skin is doing a great job protecting you, no need to treat it super rough.
Sensitive skin is usually diagnosed by a dermatologist and describes the skin’s inability to operate as a functional barrier. If you have been diagnosed with a contact allergy to any of the constituent ingredients, consult with your doctor before using this product. If you suspect an allergy, consult your physician before continuing to use this product. Although we have formulated this product to minimize reactivity to various skin conditions, we cannot guarantee it will be suitable for everyone.
If you have very sensitive skin, we recommend performing a Skin Sensitivity Test before using our product.
Before Use:
We recommend performing a patch test prior to full application of our products, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies. Apply a small amount of the product to a discreet area like the inside of your wrist or behind your ear.
Observe for Reactions:
Leave the product on for 10 minutes and observe the next day for any signs of irritation or discomfort, such as redness, itching, or swelling. If any adverse reactions occur, discontinue use immediately and consult with a healthcare professional.
Enjoy with Confidence:
Once confirmed safe, enjoy the benefits of our products with confidence knowing they're tailored to meet your skincare needs.
MESH Laboratory is for the natural, conscious minded — formulated skincare to help you unwind, detoxify and clarify your skin with some of nature's most precious ingredients.
